is to raise graduation rates, reduce pregnancy and risky health behaviors,
gang activity, drug and alcohol use and then to challenge the girls to
dream, create goals and to navigate successfully in society beyond public
housing.

The Bling girls, together with Rotary, recently painted bowls for the
annual Empty Bowl Luncheon for the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. BLING is
a partnership of the Gainesville Housing Authority, the Hall County Health Dept. District
2, the Rotary Club of Hall County, the Marta Chapman Memorial Foundation

Wedding Bells can be heard in the air, and Tuesday's Rotary Club meeting was a GREAT FAMILY OF ROTARY EVENT, as the club held a wedding shower for Corrie Hill (member) & Corey Hulsey!

The shower benefited their favorite charity, 'My Sister's Place'.

My Sister's Place has a  wishlist set up on Amazon:http://smile.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/1OPVMP28VDP8I. If you order through that link, which is connected to Amazon Smile - My Sister's Place will get a monetary donation for the purchase amount at no additional cost to them.

Currently, their greatest needs are for daily goods like paper towels, toilet paper, OTC medication for adults (pain relief, allergy medicine, cold medicine, cough syrup) and cleaning supplies. They could also use bath towels.
Also, monetary contributions can be made directly to My Sister's Place. Please email managing director Brandee Thomas at bthomas@my-sisters-place.org or call 770.532.5111.

This FAMILY OF ROTARY event proved to be a lot of fun, while at the same time benefiting a local charitable organization.

The Georgia Underwriting Association (GUA) was created by the Georgia Legislature and functions as an insurance marketplace of last resort providing basic property and liability insurance.  GUA insures over $3 billion dollars in real and personal property.

The Georgia Underwriting Association does not compete with the private market, but rather as a complement to the free market. Because GUA exists, the tens of thousands of Georgia families and businesses who may not find other insurance available now have protection.

Through a subsidiary known as Georgia Arson Control, they offer a reward of up to $10,000 for the arrest and conviction of those guilty of the crime of arson.

In November 2011, the Board of Directors of the Georgia Underwriting Association (GUA) concluded an extensive search to recruit and hire a new President. Jim Beck’s background includes working in an independent insurance agency as well as serving for over a decade as Senior Director of Government Relations for a Fortune 150 insurance company. Jim Beck’s service to the state also included a term as Deputy Insurance Commissioner as well as Chief of Staff for the current Insurance Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens.

Jim Beck serves as a Deputy Sheriff for the Haralson County Sheriff’s Department where he established the agency’s first Crime Prevention Unit.  He was appointed by the Carroll County Board of Commissioners to serve on the board of Carroll County Department of Family and Children’s Services. He is a Deacon at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton, where he has been a member for over 20 years. He and his wife, Lucy have one son, Jimmy Beck Jr. who is a senior at Kennesaw State University’s Coles College of Business.

Today was the first meeting of the year for our new President, Sonja McLendon, but it was ALSO her birthday today!  In honor of both, the Family of Rotary committee presented her with her very own Princess tiara and Magical Wand.

Happy Birthday, President Sonja.

Phil Dennis from Georgia Mountain Food Bank presented our program today.  He explained the difference between a 'food bank' and a 'food pantry', then went on to explain the significant impact of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank in the communities which it serves.

Last year, the GMFB reached over 1.2 million people, collecting and redistributing 1.99 million pounds of food.  Since its inception in 2008, it has handled over 24 million pounds of foodstuff.

On July 28th, we will be having an after hours social/service project as we paint bowls for the Food Bowl Luncheon which is a community event in September.  In September, which is Hunger Action Month, we will be having an after hours vocational visit and project at the food bank.

StandUp For Kids is a non-profit organization, with its national headquarters in Atlanta.  It was founded over 20 years ago by a group of volunteers in San Diego.  The mission is to end the cycle of youth homelessness.

A program has begun in Gainesville that models the North Fulton Initiative, in the North Fulton County Schools.  The mission is to help "homeless" or "at risk" teens stay in school and graduate.    We accomplish our mission by providing mentoring every other week.  We provide a consistent adult role model that cares, listens, provides emotional support, and positive reinforcement.  As the relationship grows, the student begins to trust the mentor.  That is when the "magic" begins.  At this point in the student/mentor relationship, mentors are able to provide so much insight, guidance, and really help these struggling teens.

Hall County Rotarian Kick Off.  What we learned in 2014 and what’s ahead!

Our Club members represent some top shelf talent in our community.   At the first meeting of 2015, it’s important to reflect and one great way to do this is through the lens of our fellow Rotarians?

Each member will be given the opportunity to share a lesson learned in 2014 and what’s around the corner in 2015.   Please think about two important questions that will be facilitated on the 6th;

1)    What was the one great lesson from 2014
2)  Within membership classifications, please think and prepare a brief prediction or thought in your field of expertise.

Al Trembley will facilitate our discussion.

Heritage Academy is a unique, private school that utilizes an integrated instructional approach to education in order to produce a higher degree of academic achievement.  The school is essentially a concrete expression of a new educational model, in which two proven elements of educational success—the professional instruction of a classroom teacher and the one-on-one instruction and/or guidance of each student’s parent—are combined in a single unified program.  Other proven elements, which are a part of this school’s programming, include low student/teacher ratios, hands-on learning, and a strong work ethic for students, effective curriculum, and local school operation and management.

What a great day at our club meeting today!

We had District Rotary Leadership from all over the district join us as we celebrated our Rotary Foundation involvement of the past Rotary year.  Our per capita giving for the 2013-2014 year was over $900, an unheard of level in any sized club.

It was also announced that one of our members, Past District Governor Dianne Cammarata, was recently awarded the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, one of the two highest honors bestowed by The Rotary Foundation, and awarded to less than a hundred Rotarians around the world in any year, from among 1.2 million Rotarians.

After that, Dr. Tom Smiley, Senior Pastor of Lakeview Church presented a wonderful talk on Gratitude and Thanksgiving.  Thanks much, Dr. Smiley!

Pepper Pettit, from the Rotary Club of Dawson County, shared with us some of the activities which his club has engaged in to grown and train their membership.  He related to us that one of the strongest aspects of club growth is actually member retention through engagement of the new Rotarian.

He noted that "you're not in a Rotary Club unless you have Rotary in your heart."

The District 1820 (Germany) Vocational Training Team (VTT) has arrived safely in Georgia!

The Six member team visited our Club on Tuesday.  They are able to visit only a few select clubs while here, so we are very fortunate to have them.

We had a very informative meeting as they discussed what they are experiencing and learning while here in the United States.  The group is all educators, and they have been visiting numerous schools (all grade ranges), colleges, and universities in District 6910.

What a great Vocational Visit to President Elect Paula Phillips' organization.  The club had lunch, heard from Paula about the abundant activities in her organization, and toured the facility.  Rehabilitation Industries of Northeast Georgia (RING) essentially serves citizens with disabilities in either giving them employment, training, and/or counseling to enable them to join the workforce.

Joe Elam from Habersham Bicycles provided a program on bicycling today.  the reasons many individuals bike is for fitness and stress relief, challenging for distance, and opportunity for a family to interact together.

Joe also talked about personal safety and responsibility that each cyclist has for riding in a safe manner and following the laws that apply to bicycling.  Part of being responsible is choosing both the time and location for safe cycling.  Helmets are required for anyone under 16 years of age and may be required on trails based on jurisdiction of trail.  He provides safety education information when someone purchases a bike from his shop.

In his discussion, Joe also takes about how the State of Georgia is slowly starting to become more bicycle friendly with bike pathways and lanes being developed for this activity.  Some communities are moving forward sooner, like the Silver Comet Trail, as a good example of a biking pathway.

Assisting Families of Our Fallen Officers

Every day those in law enforcement risk their lives to protect us. The rising numbers of officer deaths in recent years has made us aware of the sacrifices we ask these men and women to make every day. Together we can help families of fallen officers in their time of need.

Care for Cops is a non-profit organization that has provided direct financial assistance to more than twenty-eight families since 2004. We provide direct financial assistance to families that have lost a loved one, helping to:

  • Provide resources in times of great need
  • Bridge the financial gap when a loved one is lost
  • Acknowledge the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in Georgia

Law enforcement officers deserve to have the peace of mind of knowing their families will receive the assistance needed if they are killed in the line of duty.

...and some great humor!!!  What a great presentation!  Gordon gave us a lot of interesting history tidbits about Gainesville's and Hall County's history.

Gordon Sawyer and his wife, Jean, have been involved in this community’s activities so long that their pastor accuses them of personally remembering any history that comes up. In 1960, Gordon founded a business-to-business advertising agency here that dealt in national and international marketing. He retired from that in 1991, and dabbled in Republican politics in the year when Hall County went from all Democrat to all Republican. In 2001, he became founding chairman of RED CLAY Interactive, an internet marketing company located in Buford. But all the way, he admits he has been  a history nut.

He focuses on the history of mountainous Northeast Georgia and its people, pointing out this history is totally different from the traditional plantation history of Georgia. He has written six books about the history of this area, and today will talk with us about the book on Confederate General James Longstreet, who is buried in Gainesville’s Alta Vista Cemetery.

Great program for Hall County Rotarians this past Tuesday. PDG Rich Panyik told us how he trained and rode in a 107 mile Ride for Polio. The annual ride is held in Tucson, Arizona, and this was the first time in over 50 years it rained and the temps were in the 50s.  It took Rich a little over 10 hours to complete the ride because of the incliment weather.

$2.1 million was raised from the riders and matched from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Rich raised $9,000.00 that turned into $27,000 once matched.

Rich's passion for Rotary and Eradication of Polio was very prominent in his presentation.

After being asked if he took Performance Enhancing drugs to complete this ride...we all laughed and appreciated Rich's wonderful spirit.  He also trained and rode with his daughter, Cary.

Thank you Rich and his wife Marla, who is a new Rotarian in Loganville, for a great program !

What a day at Rotary Club of Hall County.  The winners of The Four Way Test Essay Contest at our Partners in Education School, Sugar Hill Elementary, arrived in our limo for the fourth consecutive year.  Parents, Guests, Members, and SHES staff were treated to three magnificent presentations of their speeches.

Viva La Rotary!

Viva La Sugar Hill Elementary School!

(a 2013 Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence School in Georgia)

The really amazing thing, as Principal Beth Skarda explained, is that this school is a "poverty" school, as over 90% of the student population is on free or reduced lunch program.  Principal Skarda and all of her staff beam with pride when they talk about their school, and the Rotary Club of Hall County is very proud to be their Partner in Education.

Our club made a contribution to The Redbud Project, which funded the Linwood Nature Preserve on Gainesville City owned property.  The preserve, located at 160 Springview Drive, just off Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville, offers 3.5 miles of walking trails, bridges over a stream, a walk by Lake Lanier and through the forest.  In addition to this, there are several decks, making this the perfect escape for a lunch break.  For more info on The Redbud Project, visit their website at www.RedbudProject.org

A Gainesville family well known for encouraging and advocating for people with disabilities has a good thing going.

Helping extend the entrepreneurial spirit to more of the community, Randy Owens and his mother Marty came up with the idea of the Rooster's Perch.

The perch shop offers hand created gifts and coffee. The gift items are crafted by people with disabilities, according to Marty Owens.

"We sell gifts that they have made. It is a way for them to be employed, make some money and make contributions to the community," she said.

Those gifts are a diverse collection, including jewelry, yard art, scarves, head bands, fishing lures and turkey calls to name a few.

Marty Owens also said they plan to open a green house and garden center on site. The shop is part of the Randy and Friends organization and is at 869 Main Street.

The hours are 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Marty Owens said they hope to expand those hours.

Hai Dong presented a stiring presentation today on the Falun Gong persecution in China.  It is a topic which needs more publicity around the world.  Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong) is an advanced self-cultivation practice of the Buddha School.  It is a discipline in which "assimilation to the highest qualities of the universe (Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance) - is the foundation of practice."  Hai's presentation centered on the persecution of those practicing this ancient art.

Newly elected Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch made a wonderful presentation to the club today.  Recently elected, he explained a great number of changes and improvements which he is making in the department.  As he explained the changes, it was easy to see and feel his enthusiasm as the new Sheriff of Hall County.  In the process, he also detailed how a great number of his changes are more cost effective, and will save millions in costs of operating the Department.  Let's look for a really efficient, streamlined, and motivated Sheriff's Department in the near future under Sheriff Couch's leadership.

There was not a dry eye in the room as our GRSP (Georgia Rotary Student Program) student talked about GRSP and how it had changed her life.  Anne, along with her host 'mom' Lona Pope, encouraged members to consider hosting as a secondary host in the coming year.  Lona attested as to how the relationships developed as a host have enriched her life with past GRSP students still in touch and visiting with their children.  Anne had previously studied in Taipei and compared studying in Gainesville GA at Brenau University to that.  She said she felt as if she belonged everywhere she went.  Also, she spoke of the leadership skills and public speaking abilities it had helped her to develop.   She has traveled extensively during her time in the States and called her visit with the Denmark Ambassador in Washington DC one of her life's favorite moments.  She will go home next month and will return to political science studies, as she has learned here that is an area for which she has interest in pursuing.  We will all miss you, Anne!  Stay in touch with Anne on Facebook.

Rick Aiken, Executive Director of Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, told the story of how a humble cinder shelter building evolved into a modern spay/neuter facility.  Rick will soon retire after 25 years of service and his story was all about gratitude.  He told of how he fell in love with a dog at a young age after having his parents divorce.  From that time on, animals were a big part of his life. He worked in a zoo for many years and even lost his thumb to a hungry cat at the zoo.  A new Executive Director has been selected.  And a big retirement party is being planned.

Eric Nyuma ( pronounced Numa) spoke to our club at the invitation of Randy and Friends, a local non-profit organization, whose purpose is to see that people with disabilities are given the same choices, as any member of the community expects.

Mr. Nyuma is a social advocate and motivational speaker, whose heart is to see that Liberia is rebuilt and each Liberian is given equal opportunities. He works at the Ministry of Finance with the Department of Administration. He volunteers with the Second Lady of the Republic in her fight for the needs of women, children and people with disabilities.

He showed a wonderful powerpoint presentation which made his talk really "touch home" with the membership.  We hope to work together with Eric, through Randy and Friends, to implement a project in Eric's region in the upcoming Rotary year.

Great program today!  Retirement Consultant, Chris Caldwell, presented a program on retirement planning unlike no other.  We typically think finances when discussing the topic, but Chris suggested happiness in retirement in dependent on much more.  Through his personal interviews with hundreds of retirees, Chris discovered there are five areas to consider for a happy retirement:

·       Finances:  Plan on living a long time, save as much as possible, and have zero debt before retiring.

·       Family:  Build relationships prior to retiring in order to enjoy family in retirement.

·       Fitness:  Our greatest asset is our health.  Take care of yourself: live healthy before retirement to assure good health in retirement.

·       Faith:  A relationship with God is essential for the support in dealing with life situations.

·       Fellowship:  Retirees need a place to go – a sense of contributing.  It is easy to feel disconnected from society without association with a civic club, church, or other group.

peace-286Alliance for Smiles is a not for profit humanitarian organization that provides free cleft surgery around the world and works with local medical professionals to develop long-term multidisciplinary care to address the speech, hearing, dental, orthodontic and social suport neeeds of patients after surgery.

Last Summer, District 6910, sponsored a cleft surgery mission to Singida, Tanzania. While in Singida, the team worked with local surgeons and nurses to begin a training process which will ultimately enable them to provide this care.

The Elisha family is an example of their work. Four children from this family received free surgery for cleft lip and/or cleft palate. The Elisha family lives in the remote bush. In a family of 7 members, 6 have cleft lip and or palate. Every child in the family is impacted. They were unable to correct the palate of the youngest child because he was only one month old and needs to be one year before they operate on his palate. The one (who has cleft palate) is 26 years old and had to care for the children having surgery. She will decide if she wants her palate repaired during the next mission.

District 6910 has submitted a Matching Grant to TRF for a mission to Dhaka, Bangladesh leaving in March of 2013. Eleven of 19 team members are Rotarians, with five of those coming from District 6910.  Barbara will be discussing this very important work of Rotary International and District 6910 as our program on Tuesday.

As an outreach of the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, Donna Redfeather and others brought a wonderful program of song and history of the Cherokee People in Northeast Georgia.

This  program, sponsored by the History Museum of Sautee Nacoochee Community Center, tells a story of the Cherokee people that lived in our area.  Much more than a history, the daily lives of the native people are explored and wonderful legends are told--all supplemented with authentic music including flute, drums and vocals by Women of Heart.

The presentation is designed to be enjoyed by folks of all ages.

It informs and entertains and brings the Cherokees alive as a people with a well-ordered society, and traditions; not just another tribe.

We had an event packed and great meeting today at the Rotary Club of Hall County.

As a show of appreciation to our weekly program speakers, we donate a children's book to the library at Sugar Hill Elementary School in honor of our speaker, with a placard in the binder.  Shelley Palmour and Shelley Palmour State Farm sponsor this project for us, and today, Shelley presented President Dianne and the club with TWO baskets of new books for us to use in honoring our weekly speakers.  See pictures below.

We inducted the newest member of Rotary International today (at least for a few minutes) as we welcomed Janet Allison into the Rotary Club of Hall County.  See pictures below of her sponsor, Melody Marlowe, "pinning" Janet as the newest Rotarian worldwide.

John Haynes III, District 6910 C.A.R.T. Chairperson, gave an informative presentation to the club about the background and activities of the Coins For Alzheimer Trust.  The effort was founded in the Carolinas and has already spread to much of the Southeastern United States in Zones 33 & 34 of Rotary International.

Benny Nix presented our program today, with thoughts on how we can learn to be content with what we have in life.  He also discussed how many people say "Thanks", with no meaning, and explained how we can learn to be truely thankful in life.

Benny is a Baptist preacher, but in the words of his daughter Melody, who is a member of our club, "Don't hold that against him." He was born and raised in Gainesville and currently lives in Clermont with his wife Mary Lou. Benny was ordained in 1963 and has spent his adult life serving in churches in Hall, White, and Union Counties. Currently he serves as Pastor Emeritas at Union Baptist Church, where he was pastor for 48 years. Benny is well-known throughout our community for his comedy skits and musical entertainment that he shared with many over the years. He is a journalist/writer and an accomplished guitarist. Plan on attending this special Thanksgiving meeting.

Leo Lawrenson from the Rotary Club of Buford/North Gwinnett spoke on the "WAPI PROJECT."  What's a WAPI?

Leo presented a powerpoint program to the club, explaining what a WAPI does, why it's needed, and constructed a WAPI during his presentation.  Basically, WAPI stands for Water Pasteurization Indicator.  It's used in areas where there may be organizms in the water which would render it unsafe to drink.  When a WAPI is inserted into a container of water over heat, the wax in the WAPI melts at the temperature of 149 degrees, the same temperature at which microorganisms die.
